The Art of Letterpress

Started in the 14th century, as an alternative to laborious calligraphy. Letterpress is one of the oldest forms of printing where ink is applied to a raised plate. Type (individual letters) is hand set to form sentences within the letterpress base. Ink is then rolled over the type and the type plate is then pressed leaving an indentation into thick, soft paper. In modern times, designers can now transfer their designs into photopolymer plates rather than hand set each individual typeface.

Letterpress printing is a true art form within itself. The process requires great time and attention to detail. A single sheet can be fed through the press through several rounds of printing before completion. No two sheets are exactly the same, as ink color and impression can subtly change from piece to piece. After more than 500 years, letterpress is still a sought after art form. Each piece hand inspected and made with time, love, and care.
